You Are Making A Difference!
Because of your prayers and partnership, every single day 88.5 KLJC is reaching out to people who are lost and hurting. Consider just one letter we received recently:
“I am sending you $20.00 a month in honor of my sister. She lives in Garden Terrace of Overland Park, KS, in the Alzheimer’s Unit. She spends each day listening to KLJC. She sits in her recliner and takes notes of every program on KLJC. Sometimes she refuses to go to activities and stays busy writing because she is so interested in what is being said on the radio. Listening to KLJC has been a God send for her. Thank you for all KLJC does to make her life better each day.”
Mercy Mission Begins
As a local station, we are blessed with the opportunity to be involved with various events which impact individuals throughout the year. As we enter the two most festive months of the year, our attention turns toward an organization impacting Kansas City families with young children. Mercy Mission was established in 2009 to benefit infants and toddlers who are at Children’s Mercy Hospital over the Christmas season. Representatives from CMH told us infants and toddlers were the most overlooked age group. There was a lack of suitable items for these children, especially at Christmas. We jumped at the chance to plug-in and help fill the void!
Since its establishment, more than $2,200, 1,700 gifts, and 1,200 Christmas cards have been collected. Last year, 125 children were in the CMH system and they, along with their families, were blessed because of Mercy Mission. The blessing is not felt by just the families who have a child in the hospital, but by the hospital staff themselves. On the delivery date, many of Children’s Mercy’s Child Life Specialist staff come from all over the hospital to help unload the delivery truck. CMH Volunteer Coordinator, Carrie Criss, said, “This collection has continued to help meet the needs of hundreds of families whose children might not have received anything for Christmas while in the hospital.” Criss also states, “When the gifts arrive on the final collection date, many of the staff members (are) just as excited as the children…” So many times, simple gifts such as rattles, sorting toys, teethers, board books, and toy keys can go a long way to brighten someone’s day and show the families that someone cares about them.
This year’s Mercy Mission collection promises to be one of the most exciting! The main collection point will be Wednesday, December 14, 2011, when we host the KLJC Christmas Party at Heart of Life Church in Lee’s Summit, MO. The evening will begin at 5:00 p.m. with Christmas activities, Veggie Tales movies, free popcorn, hot cocoa, and karaoke. To top off the evening, Patrick Ryan Clark will perform a free concert beginning at 7:00 p.m. When you come out, bring a gift to benefit Mercy Mission. For a complete list of NEW items that will be collected and drop off locations, visit our website at www.kljc.org or on facebook at 88.5 KLJC.

88.5 KLJC Lends A Hand To Habitat for Humanity
Written by Shauna Clark – Underwriting Coordinator
The staff at 88.5 KLJC is passionate about serving the community; we thoroughly enjoy being the hands and feet of Christ! We were recently asked to be part of a team helping rebuild a house for Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity. I know I jumped at the chance!
Armed with Krispy Kreme doughnuts, we arrived at the house in Independence, Missouri, energized to make a difference. We cleared out brush and debris on the outside and readied the house on the inside with primer. Joined by a few of our listeners, along with volunteers from local Walgreens stores, we were able to make an impact on one of the 40 homes Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity will dedicate to deserving homeowners in the next five years. More information about Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity can be found at www.trumanheritagehabitat.org .
Food and Family
Wayne’s French Toast Casserole
With families and friends making plans to be together for Thanksgiving and Christmas, we thought we’d share some of our staff’s favorite recipes… Enjoy!
Ingredients
- ½ cup butter (1 stick)
- 1 ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- ½ - 1 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
- 8 slices of bread
- 8 eggs
- pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 ¾ cups evaporated milk
Directions
Melt butter in a 9 x 13 pan. Add brown sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon and stir. Sprinkle the nuts over mixture. Lay bread on mixture (might have to press it in to fit). Beat eggs and salt together, then add milk, vanilla, and remaining ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Pour over bread. Cover and place in refrigerator overnight.
The next morning, uncover and bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Place upside down on plate so butter/brown sugar are on top and cut into squares.

Music Spotlight with Shane and Shane
Fatherhood suits Shane Barnard and Shane Everett. Long nights on the road have been replaced with 2:00 a.m. feedings and princess fairytales.
Worries about broken trailers and gear have been upstaged by deeper dreams and desires. With three daughters between them — Olive, Lillian, and Lucy — the longtime college friends have a wealth of inspiration staring up at them every day.
Life looks a lot different for Shane & Shane from their days at Texas A&M University. In nearly 13 years, the evergreen college favorites have toured with everyone from Mat Kearney to The David Crowder Band, garnered three Dove Awards, and sold more than 500,000 records. The two men are not only husbands and fathers now, but they’re also on staff at a local church in Dallas where they lead worship each month and teach a class at the church’s ministry leadership school, allowing them to put down roots and be involved in a true biblical community for the first time. “I teach a songwriting class, and [Shane E.] works with the students on the technical aspects of recording. These are both important parts of our time with students, but we really love pushing them to go deeper in their relationship with Christ,” shares Barnard, hitting on the duo’s very foundation that has remained unwavering through the years. One thing that hasn’t changed is Shane & Shane’s commitment to passionately sharing the Gospel.
